Description

"Medium to full ruby colour with a slight tinge of purple, the bouquet starts off slightly muffled, smoky and toasty oaky, with discreet plum and dark cherry notes. Later, dried-blood and ferrous nuances. The wine is medium to full-bodied, with plenty of tannins which add a trace of grip to the finish, perhaps derived from some new oak. A solidly built, intense pinot with structure and length, but only moderate pinosity." - Huon Hooke, The Real Review

  • Winemaking

Each grape was sourced from a single block in Rylstone, encapsulating the purest expression of this vineyard’s terroir. This block always produces high quality fruit and has been our preferred block in this vineyard for Reserve wine. The 2019 vintage marked a high yielding and exceptionally high-quality crop, providing our best opportunity to produce our first Reserve Pinot Noir.

A portion of the juice was drained, leading to a higher concentration, with a complex tannin structure and flavour profile, whilst still maintaining characteristics Pinot Noir is known for. Fermentation took place in select 225L French oak barrels for 12 months.

  • Tasting Notes

This cool-climate Pinot Noir exhibits rich aromas of mocha and dark cherry, a hint of vanilla, medium-body, with a savoury finish and delicate tannins.

  • Story

Pinot Noir has been a staple at Cassegrain Wines throughout our 40 years. When the opportunity arose to produce a Reserve Pinot Noir, due to its inherent versatility, we wanted to showcase a deeply complex style of Pinot Noir, as a contrast to our previous Pinot’s.

This is the first time we have had a Pinot Noir meet our strict criteria to be a Cassegrain Reserve, and we are incredibly excited to share it with you.
