2018 Edition Noir Syrah Pinot Noir
Black cherries, strawberry and fine tannins with white pepper. Medium-bodied blend is framed with French oak.
What is old is new again. This was the classic Hunter River Burgundy blend that was first released by pioneer Hunter Valley winemaker Maurice O’Shea in the 1930’s. Labelling regulations were very different back then and wines were labelled according to style and not necessarily by grape variety. Our take on this classic blend utilises grapes from cool climate vineyards; Syrah from Orange and Pinot Noir from Rylstone. Wild yeasts were utilised for the ferments to build complexity into each wine. After fermentation, the individual components were matured in a combination of 225L French oak barriques and 2,500L large format oak barrels, with the small wood providing new oak integration and the large barrels providing freshness. When it came to blending, we selected a medium bodied savoury Syrah to compliment the Pinot Noir without overpowering the blend.
