Cassegrain Wines

Meet the Cassegrains

Descended from an old winemaking family in France, Cassegrain Wines uses a rich knowledge of traditional French winemaking methods combined with modern Australian technique and technology to create a diverse portfolio of wines. For over thirty years, Cassegrain has been led by industry pioneer John Cassegrain, whose French heritage and unique winemaking experience has shaped the distinctive house style.

Family tradition is a vital ingredient at the heart of the past, present and future of Cassegrain Wines. Above the entrance to our Cellar Door, you will find the historic Cassegrain family crest crafted in stained glass, along with the family motto in medieval french - "Je Resjois Les Cvers", (make the heart rejoice). This is the essence of the Cassegrain family and the wines they produce.

Meet John Cassegrain

In the late 1970s, as major advancements were being made in Australian wine technology, John Cassegrain was undertaking his Bachelor of Oenology at South Australia’s renowned Roseworthy College. Having been influenced by these advances in wine science, John then developed his hands-on experience with ten vintages working alongside the iconic Murray Tyrrell at Tyrrells Winery in the Hunter Valley and several vintages in France including the Burgundy and Bordeaux regions.

Highly regarded in the wine industry, John has a strong interest in establishing new regions, exploring new grape varieties and encouraging more sustainable farming practices.

Meet Alex and Philippe Cassegrain

With a Bachelor of Applied Science in Viticulture and Oenology from The Universtiy of Adelaide, Alex gained valuable experience in Tasmania and France, learning his craft at Tamar Ridge Wines and Chateau Guiaud respectively. Now as Senior Winemaker at Cassegrain Wines, he works closely with his father as together they evolve and refine the distinctive wine style that they have become known for.

Youngest son Philippe, currently completing a Bachelor of Business in International Business, also works in the family business, hands on during vintage and year round as a representative of the Cassegrain portfolio and assisting with the wider business development and growth of the company.
